    “Another wine from the excellent 2019 vintage for Hawke’s Bay, Stoned Crow is the signature bottling from Squawking. The structure is noticeable, featuring grainy, chalky tannins with high- toned acidity, which are very youthful at the moment. Recently bottled, it is still settling down, so should taste more integrated by mid-winter and really hit its stride over the next couple of years. Those who prefer more earthy, spicy, evolved flavours will likely gain enjoyment from opening their bottles in the second half of this decade.”

  • Iconic Squawking Magpie Wines Continue to Impress with Outstanding 2019 Gimblett Gravels AVS Reviews


    The 2019 Gimblett Gravels Annual Vintage Selection has been revealed by Andrew Caillard MW and we’re very pleased to have both The Nest Merlot & Stoned Crow Syrah feature alongside a number of amazing wines from the region. These outstanding & iconic wines from Squawking Magpie continue to impress. The Nest Merlot received 98 points, while our Stoned Crow Syrah received 96 points & is now the most awarded AVS wine. Caillard applauded the vignerons for producing some of their finest wines yet, noting that “2019 will be remembered as a brilliant and classic all-round vintage”.

  • Winemaker’s Notes on Vintage 2021


    Our winemaker Jenny Dobson (pictured above) discusses the 2021 Vintage at Squawking Magpie in detail below.

    “2021 has the hallmarks of a great vintage where nature has offered favourable growing conditions. It is rare when quantity and quality go hand in hand and Vintage 2021 will be remembered and celebrated for its wines of outstanding quality and enjoyment. These will be wines to enjoy in their youth, for their approachability and vibrance, and to savour as they age, for their complexity and elegance.

    Despite several frost alerts in spring, bud burst across most varieties in Hawke’s Bay was early & 2 major rainfall events in November and unsettled weather during the month meant flowering was prolonged in some varieties and not so fruitful in others.

    Summer weather was mild and dry & disease pressure was low throughout the season. As the growing season progressed, berry and bunch sizes were noticeably smaller than in previous years which has resulted in low yields across most varieties. Settled, mild weather over autumn allowed the luxury of basing picking decisions on grape flavour and acid balance in white varieties, and tannin maturity in reds. The resulting young wines are already showing exquisite balance and approachability. Flavours have a purity, clarity and excitement”.

  • 2 Golds at the 2019 New Zealand International Wine Show

    We were very pleased to get two gold medals at the recent New Zealand International Wine Show. One for our 2019 Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc & the other for our 2019 PINK Rosé.

    “The 2019 competition was conducted under the Chairmanship of Bob Campbell MW, New Zealand’s most experienced senior wine judge and this country’s leading wine educator. The senior judges involve a number of leading winemakers, several Masters of Wine and many key industry personnel. Most of the senior judges have each been involved in major wine competitions for more than a decade” – NZIWS
