• An Outstanding Review for The Gravels Chardonnay 2020 by Cam Douglas MS

“This wine was selected as one of the top 12 Hawkes Bay Chardonnays from the 2020 vintage, here’s why: The bouquet is captivating and complex, a wine that speaks of place and time. There’s a core of fruit that is plush, ripe and alluring, almost beguiling with scents of yellow stone fruits, apple and citrus peel and a smidgin of pith. On the palate the core fruit flavours are surrounded by wood and some fruit tannins, acidity is pristine, fresh adding vibrato and highlighting some natural baking spice qualities from the fruit and oak. – 96 points, Outstanding”.

  • First Flight Syrah 2019 Recommended by Mac MacPherson

Nice to see our First Flight Syrah 2019 recommended in Mac Macpherson’s fortnightly wine column.

“This label has proven to be a real winner for Squawking Magpie. These varietally correct Hawke’s Bay wines clearly offer good value and the 2019 Syrah is perhaps my favourite from this range”.
This Syrah is “immediately appealing and fragrant on the nose. On the palate it is soft and supple, with an amalgam of middleweight dark blue fruits that aim for easy-drinking rather than structure and complexity” – Mac MacPherson

  • First Flight Gets Bob Campbell MW’s ‘Buy of the Week’

Brilliant to be Bob Campbell MW’s ‘Buy of the Week‘ at The Real Review. Our First Flight Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2020 is a “dense Gimblett Gravels red with cassis, dark berry, dark chocolate, liquorice and blueberry. A youthful, vigorous, high-energy wine that offers a mouthful of flavour and a firm structure. Outstanding value!” – 93 Points, Bob Campbell MW

  • Another Outstanding Review for The Nest 2019

We’re ‘Wine of the Week’ over on Camdouglasms.com! Here’s another outstanding review of our The Nest 2019.

“Enticing bouquet led by scents of roasted dark plums and blackberry, sweet toasty barrel with clove and vanilla pod then aromas of violets and sweet tobacco. A core of ripe red berry flavours and spicy, toasty barrel are emphasized by the an abundance of fine chalky tannins adding mouthfeel and chewiness. As the wine open up in glass the flavours of dark rose and violet emerge contrasted by dark plum and berry fruit, sweet oak and salivating acidity. There’s a saline note building on the complexity and length. Delicious, youthful, fresh and complex. Best drinking from 2023 through 2033+.”

    96 Points – Outstanding

  • CUISINE: 4.5 Stars for 2019 Counting Crows Chardonnay

Another great 4.5 star review for one of our wines thanks to Cuisine Magazine‘s NZ & International Chardonnay 2021 tasting results.“Toasty oak and a hint of terracotta interlaced with nutty fennel, grapefruit, white peach and a twist of sweet sage tingle the taste buds and leaves a sense of enjoyment. That toasty, mealy oak reappears again on the palate, interlaced with fine stonefruit notes, juicy acidity and a gentle yet powerful acid spine that helps to deliver the perfect lengthy finish.”Shop our 2019 Counting Crows Chardonnay now: bit.ly/counting-crows-chardonnay

It has serious cellaring potential.”- Bob Campbell, The Real Review , 96 points – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐See what makes this wine special here: bit.ly/SQM-Cabernets-Merlot

  • Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Stoned Crow Syrah 2019 placed at #3 in the 2021 Cuisine Magazine NZ Syrah Tasting Results.

A great 4.5-star review for our Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Stoned Crow Syrah 2019.

“Another wine from the excellent 2019 vintage for Hawke’s Bay, Stoned Crow is the signature bottling from Squawking. The structure is noticeable, featuring grainy, chalky tannins with high- toned acidity, which are very youthful at the moment. Recently bottled, it is still settling down, so should taste more integrated by mid-winter and really hit its stride over the next couple of years. Those who prefer more earthy, spicy, evolved flavours will likely gain enjoyment from opening their bottles in the second half of this decade.”

  • Winemaker’s Notes on Vintage 2021

Our winemaker Jenny Dobson (pictured above) discusses the 2021 Vintage at Squawking Magpie in detail below.

“2021 has the hallmarks of a great vintage where nature has offered favourable growing conditions. It is rare when quantity and quality go hand in hand and Vintage 2021 will be remembered and celebrated for its wines of outstanding quality and enjoyment. These will be wines to enjoy in their youth, for their approachability and vibrance, and to savour as they age, for their complexity and elegance.

Despite several frost alerts in spring, bud burst across most varieties in Hawke’s Bay was early & 2 major rainfall events in November and unsettled weather during the month meant flowering was prolonged in some varieties and not so fruitful in others.

Summer weather was mild and dry & disease pressure was low throughout the season. As the growing season progressed, berry and bunch sizes were noticeably smaller than in previous years which has resulted in low yields across most varieties. Settled, mild weather over autumn allowed the luxury of basing picking decisions on grape flavour and acid balance in white varieties, and tannin maturity in reds. The resulting young wines are already showing exquisite balance and approachability. Flavours have a purity, clarity and excitement”.
